The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World

A multimedia project by Ben Coley

The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World is a project by third year Multimedia Journalism student Ben Coley.

Are sex robots simply harmless toys for the curious, or do they pose much more serious and wider cultural issues? The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World assesses whether sex robots are morally justifiable and looks towards future landscape of the 21st century sex robot phenomenon.

Project Development

Updated: Dec 9, 2018

The initial idea for my major multimedia project was to explore the existence of sex robots. This idea came about after I discovered a report published by Futurologist, Dr Ian Pearson; 'The Future of Sex Report - The Rise of The Robosexuals.' Having spent some time researching around the topic of sex robots, I have found a lot of existing work which focuses on the existence of sex robots, for instance the Life Hacks Podcast with Dr Radha on BBC Radio 1.

At this current stage, I am noticing that whilst there is a large quantity of material about sex robots in the format of written articles and TV documentaries (e.g 'The Sex Robots Are Coming' on Channel 4) there are few long-form radio documentaries that explore the topic of sex robots.

Ahead of my initial pitch on Tuesday 9th October I am going to research more specific angles around this topic and gather ideas for a target station, target audience and an effective discourse.
