This week I attended a live debate at Exeter University. The debate titled 'This House Would Have Sex With a Robot' featured four expert speakers within the robotics, porn and ethics professions who each provided their own ethical arguments. After a two minute speech from each guest speaker, the opportunity was then given to the audience to ask questions.
My main reason for attending this debate was to widen my own ethical perspectives on the subject of sex robots before engaging with my own research and questioning. I also attended this debate in order to reach out to experts in the field and to understand the pre-existing ethical issues in regard to sex robots.
The speakers at the event included: Jerry Barnett (author Porn Panic: Sex and Censorship), Jane Fae (feminist journalist, writer and activist), Caroline Farrow (journalist for UK Catholic Press) and Kathleen Richardson (Professor of Ethics and Culture of Robotics and AI).
The debate offered some insightful perspectives on the subject.
Whilst attending this event, I interviewed Jane Fae. She is a feminist and freelance writer on the issues of sexual liberty and politics.
Jane spoke about the infancy of sex robot technology, the fact that sex robots may never look human-like and that the future prospect of sex being solely provided by technology is not out of the question:
