The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World

A multimedia project by Ben Coley

The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World is a project by third year Multimedia Journalism student Ben Coley.

Are sex robots simply harmless toys for the curious, or do they pose much more serious and wider cultural issues? The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World assesses whether sex robots are morally justifiable and looks towards future landscape of the 21st century sex robot phenomenon.

THE DEEPER CUT: Dr Ian Pearson

Updated: Dec 9, 2018

"All of these ethical issues will just blur the boundaries and gradually push us towards a world where it is considered perfectly normal to have sex with a robot."

For my project, one of the central interviewees I have spoken to is Dr Ian Pearson.

Dr Ian Pearson is one of the world's leading futurologists and is a Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society as well as a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science and the World Innovation Foundation. Dr Ian Pearson, who's predictions have an 85% success rate, has written 8 different books and has featured in over 750 radio and TV interviews talking about how rapidly changing technologies will affect businesses and society.

Dr Ian Pearson published a report, in partnership with Bondara, in which he predicted that by the year 2050, human on robot sex will be more common than human on human sex. The report also predicts that some forms of robot sex will be appearing in high-income, very wealthy households as soon as 2025.

Whilst the ethics concerning sex robots were discussed by Dr Ian Pearson in depth, he also spoke about some other sex robot predictions which were startling.

Vacating the human body

Dr Ian Pearson highlighted the technological possibility of being able to temporarily "suspend human consciousness" in order to upload the brain's information into other sources (e.g a robot). This would be achieved by supplying a 50hz frequency through a particular part of the brain. Dr Ian Pearson believes that somebody could then borrow a temporarily vacated brain by uploading their consciousness so that they can embody another person. This will enable someone to have sex with other people or robots as another being, be it a person or a robot.

Hackers may be able to spy on you having sex

With the potential to be able to set up a digital link in order to connect a human brain to another human or robot, Dr Ian Pearson sights that this brings with it the risk of hackers being able to intervene. Dr Ian Pearson explains that hackers could theoretically not only hack into a human's brain but also into the nervous system, enabling others to not only spy on you during sex but to also feel your experiences. This is something that Dr Ian Pearson believes could be used by the military in the future when questioning captives.

This technology and concept is something that Dr Ian Pearson believes could make "electronic immortality" a possibility.
