The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World is a project by third year Multimedia Journalism student Ben Coley.


Are sex robots simply harmless toys for the curious, or do they pose much more serious and wider cultural issues? The Ethics of Sex Robots in a Digital World assesses whether sex robots are morally justifiable and looks towards future landscape of the 21st century sex robot phenomenon.

The Encounter...

This week I travelled to Aylseford, Kent to see a sex robot for myself. Vibez Adult Boutique is the only adult store in the UK to sell a sex robot. The sex robot on sale there is Samantha, which was designed and created by Synthea Amatus.


On the week in which I visited the store, Samantha was not working so could not speak or interact with me - despite this it was still interesting to see a sex robot in person.


I also met Vibez Adult Boutique owner, Tracey Whitmore, who spoke about the sales of sex robots and who buys sex robots.






 




 

Arran Lee Squire is a sex robot user and is the co-founder of the sex robot design company Synthea Amatus. Arran Lee Squire used to own Samantha and has since given her to Vibez Adult Boutique for display in their store. I wanted to speak to Arran Lee Squire to find out about his ethical perspective on sex robots:
